Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
