In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
